So last night was pretty scary here. Our office decided to go to the Round Rock Express baseball game (a minor league team). When we got there, we were told the game had a 40 minute delay due to weather. We looked in the sky and were baffled as it was a normal Austin day-Hot and humid!
About 10 minutes into the game, the sky turned very dark grey and people sitting around me started getting out their cell phones. Turned out we were right in the path of the alleged tornado. Now, we often get tornado warnings, so nobody really gave it to much thought. Until about 5 more minutes had passed. It was then that the lightning started and the sky turned a frightening, almost black color. I left 10 minutes later.
As I was leaving, no rain. After getting in my car-massive amounts of rain! Then the wind started and the sky was getting even darker. I was still doing okay. It wasn’t until I heard the emergency news break telling everybody in certain areas to seek cover. I was in one of those areas. The baseball field.
I immediately called Winston, who was at his History class. He said to continue as long as I felt I could and then to take cover. I made it 10 minutes from my house when the wind, and rain was unbearable and the hail had just begun.
I took refuge with close to 60 other terrified people at a local hotel, my car parked under the carport. I stayed there for 45 minutes until I saw that the storm had passed enough for me to get home to the dogs. Which I did.
When I got home, I realized that our smoke detectors were all going off and I couldn’t get them to stop. Winston got home shortly after I did-around 9:15. At 11:30 our maintenance man came and unhooked all of our smoke detectors and I went to bed—exhausted.
Needless to say it was a very surreal experience, but we are all okay and there is zero damage to our cars or apartment…except 4 disabled smoke detectors!!
